

Amir K Jaffer, MD is an Associate Professor of Medicine and the Division Chief of Hospital Medicine, in the Department of Medicine at the University of Miami, Leonard M. Miller School of Medicine. He recently joined the faculty after 10 years at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. Dr. Jaffer is also the Service Chief of Medicine at the University of Miami Hospital in Miami, Florida.
Dr. Jaffer received his medical degree from Boston University School of Medicine in 1994. His postgraduate training includes an internship and residency in internal medicine at Yale New Haven Hospital in New Haven, CT. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and practices both Hospital and Perioperative Medicine.
Dr. Jaffer is actively involved in patient care, education, research, administration and quality improvement in the area of hospital medicine, perioperative medicine, anticoagulation and thrombosis. He was awarded the Scholarship in Teaching Award in 2006, and again in 2007, by the Case Western Reserve Medical School for recognition of his efforts as an educator during his tenure at the Cleveland Clinic. He is the Associate Editor of the book Hospital Medicine Secrets. He has conducted research and published numerous articles within his areas of interest and expertise, which include: treatment and prevention of venous thromboembolism, prevention of stroke in atrial fibrillation, anticoagulation therapy, specifically perioperative management and medical consultation. He also speaks nationally and internationally on these topics.
He is currently a board member of the Anticoagulation Forum and the Society of Perioperative Assessment and Quality Improvement (SPAQI). He is also an active member of several professional organizations, including American College of Physicians (ACP), Society of General Internal Medicine (SGIM), the Society of Hospital Medicine (SHM) and the International Society of Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH).
